Indian Wedding Haldi Ceremony

Indian weddings are full of many customs and traditions.  One special event that is a precursor to the wedding ceremony is the Haldi ceremony.  According to Indian tradition the Haldi ceremony is performed a day or two prior to the wedding ceremony.  The ceremonies take place in the bride’s home for the bride and the groom’s home for the groom.  It is important to note that after the ceremony the bride and groom are no longer allowed to see each other until the wedding ceremony.

The Haldi ceremony is a colorful event.  Haldi means turmeric.  In many parts of India the Haldi is also called Uptaan.  Turmeric is smeared onto the bride and groom.  Traditionally turmeric is good for the complexion and it is suppose to make the bride pretty for the wedding day.  It is an old ritual to bless the bride and groom and have a colorful celebration at the same time.  The decorations are focused on flowers and the bride even wears jewelry made of flowers.  Marigolds and roses are the flowers of choice for this ceremony.  The bride also wears yellow and the color yellow is emphasized in the décor to draw out the color of Haldi.

To modernize this tradition of the Haldi ceremony which is full of Indian sweets, beautifully decorated cakes would be fun.  A tiered cake with yellow icing and red Indian décor would fit in beautifully.

Wedding favors is also a nice gesture for this ceremony, just like bridal showers, the guests deserve favors for attending this celebration.  Pretty gold lac boxes or Indian bangles for the ladies with yellow personalized favor tags are thoughtful favor ideas.
